What is Autism

Autism is a pervasive developmental disorder that usually appears during the first three years of life. Individuals with autism spectrum disorders are often characterized by impairments in many areas of functioning including expressive and receptive communication, social interaction, play, and self-help skills. In addition, these individuals often display unusual and repetitive patterns of behavior that interfere with daily functioning and learning. Current estimates suggest that autism occurs in one out of every 150 births. The cause of autism has not yet been identified although present studies indicate a neurological basis for the disability.

What is Applied Behavior Analysis

Applied behavior analysis is the scientific study of behavior.  Decades of empirical research have resulted in behavioral principles that have been applied to solving problems in a number of fields including business, health and fitness, and most widely in the fields of education and special education.

Behavior analytical research, published since 1968, has resulted in teaching strategies for individuals with autism with scientific evidence of effectiveness.  These studies have related to nearly all areas of functioning  including academic skills, independence, self-care, expressive and receptive language, skill generalization, and vocational skills, to name a few.  An intensive education program, based on the principles of applied behavior analysis, has enabled individuals with autism to acquire repertoires of skills to dramatically increase their functioning.
